Laura Owens
March 6 – May 9, 2004
Organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, this is the first major monographic survey of the Los Angeles-based artist’s work. Tracing Owens’ development from 1997 to the present, the exhibition features approximately 40 paintings and works on paper. Incorporating a side and imaginative range of subjects and techniques, Owens’ work moves with ease between high and low, personal and social, figuration and abstraction. In her paintings, she explores beauty and decoration and integrates elements such as collage and fabric and decorative patterns. Her sources of inspiration range from English embroidery and Chinese and Japanese landscape painting to her own photography.
Jean-Michel Othoniel
May 28 – August 31, 2004
Jean-Michel Othoniel (born in 1964) is one of the most highly revered French artists of his generation. Othoniel is known for infusing his works in all media with delicacy, light, and fantasy. His glass Kiosque des Noctambules, created for the entrance for the Palais Royal station, by the Paris Metro to commemorate its Centenary has become of the most celebrated recent public works in France. Othoniel’s sources include French Art Nouveau, the architecture of Antonio Gaudi and the Vienna Secession for the Cartier Foundation in Paris. Othoniel will create a magical environment that sparkles with Murano glass, beads and fine gauze. Othoniel lives and works in Paris and Miami Beach. This exhibition travels to MOCA after its presentation in Paris, and is organized by the Cartier Foundation, Paris.
