July 12 | 7 - 10 pm | Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russel, directed by Matt Wolf

WILD COMBINATION is director Matt Wolf’s visually absorbing portrait of the seminal avant-garde composer, singer-songwriter, cellist, and disco producer Arthur Russell. Before his untimely death from AIDS in 1992, Arthur prolifically created music that spanned both pop and the transcendent possibilities of abstract art. Now, over fifteen years since his passing, Arthur's work is finally finding its audience. Wolf incorporates rare archival footage and commentary from Arthur's family, friends, and closest collaborators—including Philip Glass and Allen Ginsberg—to tell this poignant and important story.

August 9 | 7 - 10 pm | Sympathy for the Devil, directed by Jean Luc Godard

Godard's documentation of late 1960's western counter-culture, examining the Black Panthers, referring to works by LeRoi Jones and Eldridge Cleaver. Other notable subjects are the role of the media, the mediated image, A growing technocratic society, Womens Liberation, the May revolt in France and the power of language. Cutting between 3 major scenes, including the Rolling Stones in the studio, the film is visually intercut with Eve Democracy (Wiazemsky) using graffiti which amalgamates organisations, corporations and ideologies. Godard also examines the role of the revolutionary within western culture. Although he believes western culture needs to be destroyed, it can only be done so by the rejection of intellectualisation. "There is only one way to be an intellectual revolutionary, and that is to give up being an intellectual"

PERFORMANCES

August 16 | 7 - 9 pm | Artist Rafael Sanchez | MOCA at Goldman Warehouse

Visual and performing artist Rafael Sanchez and collaborator Jim Fletcher appropriate several tracks from ZZ Top’s Fandango record.  Performing as the legendary rock duo, Sanchez and Fletcher engage in a choreographed lip synch and dance routine to the selected songs, creating a minimal rock opera.  Behind the performers is a continuously shifting video projection that serves as the backdrop.
Rafael Sanchez was born in Cuba and lives in New York. His staged works include Les Fleurs des Vents (2001), Dream On (1997), and Goat Song (1995) and have been presented locally at New York's Threadwaxing Space and Mother; Boston's The Market Theater; and internationally at The Armada Festival in Holland and the Fourth International Performance Festival in Mexico City. Sanchez's visual art has been presented at several local area galleries and at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston.
