MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART TO OPEN NEW TEMPORARY ANNEX IN WYNWOOD AREA OF MIAMI
12,000 Sq.Ft. Warehouse Facility Donated by Goldman Properties Provides Additional Space to Exhibit Permanent Collection and Projects by Emerging Artists Through 2009
The Museum of Contemporary Art of North Miami will open MOCA at Goldman Warehouse, a new exhibition and art warehouse space in the Wynwood Arts and Entertainment district of Miami, on December 1, 2005. This new facility, located at 404 NW 26 Street (26th Street & 5th Avenue), just south of the Miami Design District, will become a satellite branch of MOCA’s Joan Lehman Building, located at 770 NE 125th Street in North Miami. Tony Goldman and Joey Goldman donated the Goldman Warehouse to MOCA through the year 2009. MOCA at Goldman Warehouse doubles the museum’s current gallery space and adds 4,000 square feet of art storage. The new galleries will be used to exhibit portions of the museum’s permanent collection and projects by emerging artists. This state-of-the-art, climate-controlled annex will also house a branch of the MOCA Shop. MOCA Chairman Irma Braman stated, “We express our deepest gratitude to Tony and Joey Goldman for their incredible foresight and generosity. Over the past 10 years MOCA’s programs and reputation have become bigger than its physical structure. Thanks to Tony and Joey Goldman we now have a wonderful temporary solution to our current space constraints that provides MOCA with the means to house its growing permanent collection, gives the public greater access to portions of the collection year-round, and increases the exhibition space to present projects by emerging artists.”MOCA Director Bonnie Clearwater added, “We are very excited about the endless opportunities this space will provide for the next four years. Most importantly, it will endow the museum with breathing room as it works with the City of North Miami to develop strategic ways for MOCA to grow without losing the special qualities of this extraordinary institution such as its intimacy, accessibility, and innovative programming.”Tony Goldman notes, “We hold in high esteem MOCA’s contribution to the arts and cultural infrastructure of Greater Miami and feel privileged to contribute our unique exhibition space to MOCA, to further the outstanding artistic vision driven by its chief curator and director, Bonnie Clearwater, and her vital Board. Our vision of Wynwood as Greater Miami’s central arts and entertainment district has taken a giant step forward with the opening of MOCA’s satellite at Goldman Warehouse, in the heart of the district. It is gratifying to us to know that our 12,000 square foot, state of the art facility will more than double the exhibition and storage space of this landmark contemporary art institution.” The only museum in Miami-Dade County solely devoted to contemporary art, MOCA has played a major role in the development and recognition of Miami’s art scene. The museum has earned an international reputation for its outstanding exhibitions and programming. MOCA’s Joan Lehman Building in North Miami is 23,000 square-feet, and contains just 7,500 square feet of gallery space, and an additional 350 square-feet of exhibition space for emerging artist projects in its Pavilion. Although MOCA has almost 500 works in its permanent collection, the museum has only been able to show portions of the collection in annual exhibitions, and MOCA’s art storage area is currently filled beyond its capacity.
MOCA at Goldman Warehouse:
-- Provides MOCA with much-needed, additional 12,000 square feet of exhibition space and art storage through the year 2009. It adds 8,000 square feet of gallery space, more than doubling the museum’s current gallery space in North Miami.
-- Will enable MOCA to store portions of its permanent collection, including many sculptures and large-scale installations, in a climate-controlled state-of- the-art facility. The museum’s current art storage area is filled beyond capacity.
-- Will enable MOCA to present portions of the permanent collection in public exhibitions throughout the entire year. Since MOCA’s opening in 1996, selections of the permanent collection have only been shown in annual exhibitions at its North Miami facility.
-- Will help unify the arts district of North Miami with the developing Wynwood area into a single major hub of art activity that will draw tourists and locals alike. MOCA at Goldman Warehouse is a 15-minute drive from the museum’s Joan Lehman Building via North Miami Avenue, and will build greater public awareness of MOCA and its exceptional exhibitions and educational and public programs.
-- Provides MOCA with a 2,000 square-foot gallery to present the type of emerging artist exhibitions and projects that it currently presents in its 350 square-foot Pavilion. Among the artists who have had Pavilion exhibitions at MOCA are Julian LaVerdiere, Roxy Paine, and Matthew Ritchie, and Miami artists Hernan Bas, Bhakti Baxter, Robert Chambers, William Cordova, and John Espinosa, and Teresita Fernandez.
-- Will enable MOCA to now utilize the Pavilion space at the Joan Lehman Building in North Miami for presenting more of its innovative education and public programs for the community such as lectures, seminars, and art classes for children, teens and adults year-round.
Museum of Contemporary Art
The Museum of Contemporary Art opened its Joan Lehman Building in February 1996. The museum was designed by the internationally acclaimed architect Charles Gwathmey of Gwathmey Siegel, New York, who worked in conjunction with the Miami firm of Gelabert-Navia to create an exquisite space in which to experience art. The museum is a site for discovering new artists, contemplating the work of contemporary masters, and learning about our living cultural heritage, and is known for its provocative and innovative exhibitions and public and educational programming. MOCA maintains an active exhibition schedule, presenting 8 to 10 exhibitions annually. The museum’s permanent collection reflects significant artistic developments in contemporary art by emerging and established artists from the U.S. and abroad.

For more than 30 years, Goldman Properties has recognized the value in depressed urban areas, and rejuvenated them, transforming declining historical and arts districts, including Manhattan’s Upper West Side, the Wall Street Financial District, Soho, Miami Beach’s Art Deco District and Center City, in downtown Philadelphia, into thriving global destinations. Principals Tony Goldman and Joey Goldman are now applying their expertise to Wynwood, where they have acquired more than 20 commercial properties, and are planning a 24/7 arts-oriented warehouse district and urban pedestrian community. The Goldman Warehouse opened January 2005 with select works from Tony and Janet Goldman’s private collection, consisting of modern abstract paintings, sculpture and photography, predominantly from the late 1960s.
