Wednesday, June 23,  7 – 8:30pmJoin artist Shinique Smith in conversation with curator Dr. Elizabeth Shannon as they discuss Smith's artwork, And, she has a bowl of lilacs in her room (2008), which inspired MOCA’s current permanent collection exhibition, “Collection Focus: Our Beginnings Never Know Our Ends". Both titles are drawn from T.S. Eliot's poem, "Portrait of a Lady" (1915), in which the reader is reminded of the fragility of relationships and of life itself.Using the technique of assemblage as a metaphor, Smith combines a wide variety of personal articles of clothing, figurines, and historical literary references to tether her ideas and memories associated with these objects. The bundled sculpture was originally presented at MOCA in 2010, for the artist’s first large-scale museum exhibition, “Shinique Smith: Menagerie”.Register Here
