Opening during Miami Art Week 2026, MOCA North Miami will present Geoffrey Holder: Black Magic, the first museum survey to center the visual art of Geoffrey Holder, internationally celebrated for his achievements in dance, theater, and film.

Featuring over 60 works in painting, drawing, collage, and sculpture—many never before publicly shown—the exhibition reframes Holder’s visual art as the foundation of his prolific creative life. Organized thematically, it spans five sections: Portraits, Epistles, The Sacred and the Profane, Genre, and Figure Studies. His subjects—biblical allegories restaged with modern sensibility, remembered portraits, landscapes, and luminous still lifes—assert their vitality in saturated fields of color and sweeping gesture. The human body, seen through his choreographic eye, emerges as both subject and instrument.

Guest curated by Erica Moiah James, PhD, Geoffrey Holder: Black Magic opens in November and celebrates and historicizes an extraordinary artistic legacy.
